Reflections on living as a disciple of Christ.

The Shroud and Faith

Yesterday was Resurrection Day [Easter to many]. On Saturday evening, I had the opportunity to watch a special on the History Channel on the Shroud of Turin. I don’t know how many in my reading audience are knowledgeable about the Shroud, but as you can see on the left, it is the image of a man who was wrapped in a burial shroud. If you could see all the details, you would realize this man was scourged over all his… Read more »

The Resurrection

After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. The… Read more »

The Crucifixion

From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land. About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me?” And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, He gave up His spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split. The tombs broke open and the bodies… Read more »

Praise, Petition, Thanksgiving

A healthcare vote is scheduled for tomorrow. I could once again list the problems with this plan or provide a series of cartoons that make the case for me. But today I choose another route. In everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God, we’re told in Scripture. Prayers come in many forms, but three manifestations work together: praise, petition, and thanksgiving. I want to start with praise. Lord, You are everything we… Read more »

College Republicans Dinner

I don’t usually put a lot of personal photos on this blog, but I will make an exception today. Last night was a great dinner for the Southeastern University College Republicans. I’m faculty sponsor for the organization and am proud [in the proper sense] of their commitment and desire to make a difference. Our special speaker for the dinner was Dennis Ross, who is the leading Republican candidate for Congress in our district. He spoke about the character qualities we… Read more »

Reflections on God's Grace

I want to take this opportunity to offer thanks to God for what He has allowed me to do in my life. There was a time when I thought my life was going to be wasted as a result of some bad decisions I made. Yet I learned a valuable lesson: if we turn our hearts back to the Lord, He is still there. He’s never done with us—we are truly works in progress. I was 38 when I received… Read more »

The Christian Critique

Periodically, I revisit the question of whether it is Christian to criticize people. This is especially important for someone like me who has a daily blog and who teaches in the classroom and in other venues. My words are public; they can have more of a widespread impact. I do take seriously the cautions found in the book of James, where we are told that the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity. It also says we should… Read more »
